MEN'S BOBCATS CAP WINNING WEEKEND WITH VICTORY OVER FLORIDA NAT'L UNIVERSITY 83-81
The Bobcats continued their hot start to 2015 by securing a second victory this past weekend bringing the team's overall record to 15-4 and conference record to 8-2.
Yesterday the Bobcats faced an unfamiliar opponent as they faced Florida National University (USCAA D1 Basketball School) in the Newport News Apprentice Schools' Martin Luther King Classic.
Zachary Johnson started the Bobcats off with the first 7 points scored. The score was Bobcats 11 and FNU 5 with 16:20 remaining in the first half when the Bobcats Marquise Johnson went out with an injury, a crucial blow to the Bobcats lineup for the rest of the game. With 10 minutes left in the first half the Bobcats led FNU 26-22. At Halftime the Bobcats led 44-41.
The second half started off in favor of FNU who went up 47-44 in the first minute and a half. A dunk by Jaleel Ferguson off of an assist from Rahson Robinson put the Bobcats back in front with 16:10 left in the second half. With 10 minutes remaining the Bobcats led FNU 62-58. The Bobcats led 81-75 with 2:51 remaining in the game after an And-1 layup that was made by A'Kanni White. With the game tied at 81 all Timothy Hewett drove to the basket and finished a layup with 10.6 seconds remaining in the game. This would end up being the game winner as stiff defense by the Bobcats in the remaining seconds did not allow FNU to get off a shot and the game ended 83-81 in favor of the Bobcats. Although undersized compared to the four year guys of FNU, the Bobcats were not outmuscled and proved to be the stronger team in the end.
Zachary Johnson led all scorers and rebounders accounting for a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jaleel Ferguson accounted for 16 points, Timothy Hewett had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Troy Mills finished with 11 points with them all coming in a crucial five minute stretch in the last 10 minutes of the second half. Rahson Robinson contributed with an all-around game of 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 asssists. A'Kanni White finished with 8 points and 6 asssists.
With 10 games left in the regular season, the 18th ranked Bobcats look to continue their successful season this upcoming weekend against Pitt CC and Lenoir CC, with both of those games being important conference games on the road.
