Chesapeake native Cam Thomas scored 40 points Saturday night to help the Brooklyn Nets defeat the host Philadelphia 76ers 136-121 in a teams that both were playing short-handed.

Thomas, in arguably the best offensive stretch of his career, dropped 21 points in the third quarter. The former Oscar Smith High star joined Vince Carter as the only Nets players in franchise history to log multiple 40-point games against Philadelphia.

The game was Brooklyn guard Ben Simmons’ first in Philadelphia since he left the Sixers on bad terms.

Chesapeake’s Holloway sets New Balance meet record

Chesapeake native Grant Holloway ran a world-leading and meet-record time of 7.35 seconds to win the 60-meter hurdles at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston.

The three-time world champion, a former Florida Gators star, is tuning up for the Olympics in Paris. He hasn’t lost a 60-meter hurdles race since 2014.

Tribe takes third with its season’s best score

William & Mary earned its best score of the season en route to a third-place finish at a quad meet hosted by Penn on Sunday afternoon.

Cornell claimed the team title in Philadelphia with a 194.125 and was followed by Penn (193.750), W&M (192.750) and Bridgeport (191.225).

Ascha Laird highlighted the Tribe’s individual performances by tying for third on bars with a season-high 9.750, while Michelle Ngo and Grace Costello tied for fifth on floor with a 9.8. The score represented a career high for Costello.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Bryant & Stratton rallies, improves to 3-0

Bryant & Stratton (3-0) edged Louisburg 12-11 in 10 innings in Franklin to stay unbeaten. Jake DellaVecchia hit a walk-off RBI single.

The Bobcats trailed 11-8, but they scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth to extend the game.

Steven Rodriguez belted a home run, Greenbrier Christian Academy graduate Gavin Whitehurst was 3 for 4 with four runs, Diego Melendez drove in three and Nathan Mastre had three hits and an RBI for Bryant & Stratton.

Melendez, Joshua Lopez-Torres and Allan Navarro had two hits each. Jay Leonard, the Bobcats’ ninth pitcher of the day, threw a scoreless 10th for the victory.

Bobcats gain one win on field, one by forfeit

Bryant & Stratton swept USC Sumter in a doubleheader, 16-5 and then by forfeit.

ODU blanks Brown on Cummings Day

Old Dominion (5-1) shut out Brown 7-0 on Darryl Cummings Day at Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center, where a banner celebrating the former Monarchs player, coach and promoter was unveiled.

Brothers Codie and Connor van Schalkwyk, ranked sixth nationally in doubles, won a set, as did Maxime Mareschal-Hay and Yanis Moundir, to boost ODU to a 1-0 lead. Those four Monarchs all won their singles matches against the Bears (3-5), as did Cosme Rolland de Ravel and Aryan Saleh, as ODU recovered from a 4-3 defeat to Penn the previous day.

No. 16 Kentucky overcomes No. 3 Virginia

No. 3 Virginia (5-3) fell 4-3 at No. 16 Kentucky (6-1) on Sunday and will tumble in the next Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.

The Cavaliers won the doubles point and No. 2 singles (by Dylan Dietrich) to take a 2-0 lead, but Kentucky took four straight singles courts for the victory. Most notably, Taha Baadi edged Jeffrey von der Schulenburg 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 at the top spot.

With the team match decided, UVA gained a win on line 6 from Mans Dahlberg, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3).

For the second straight match, Virginia was without its top two singles players. Senior Chris Rodesch was competing in Davis Cup for Luxembourg in Colombia, and senior Iñaki Montes was sidelined with an injury.

COLLEGE WOMEN’S TENNIS

ODU shuts out Penn State

Old Dominion’s women (2-3) defeated Penn State 4-0 after the Monarchs’ men’s match was finished.
After ODU won two of three doubles sets, Allison Isaacs, Lidiia Rasskouskaia and Ulyana Romanova lost just a combined seven games in the six sets of their singles victories against the Nittany Lions (1-4).

Tribe defeats Hoyas

William & Mary (2-0) outplayed Georgetown 5-2 in McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. Yu Chen, Hedda Gurholt, Emma Fernald and Francesca Davis beat their singles foes.

COLLEGE MEN’S LACROSSE

Hampton drops opener

Hampton began its season with a 20-5 loss at Mercer in Macon, Georgia.

Ellison Burt-Murray led the Pirates with a hat trick, and junior Dylan Robinson made a career-high eight saves.
