MEN'S BOBCATS (4-0) BEAT THE GUILFORD TECH TITANS 70-59
The undefeated BSC Bobcats (3-0), who are off to their best start since starting the program, hosted The Titans of Guilford Tech. This was the Bobcats home opener and turned out to be a back and forth affair until the end.
The Bobcats got off to an unusually slow start and found themselves trailing 3-0 until a floater by Greg Heckstall got them on the board two minutes into the game. These low scoring numbers continued five and a half minutes into the game but the Bobcats were able to take a 6-5 lead off of a fast break dunk from Freshman Trey Wiggins, assisted by Romello Anderson. A put-back dunk from Jaron Burnell allowed the Bobcats to take a 14-11 lead with 10 and a half minutes to go in the first half. The pressure defense from the Bobcats forced mistakes from the Titans which they were able to capitalize on the rest of the half and take a 33-27 halftime lead.
Greg Heckstall got the Bobcats off to a quick start in the second half by hitting a jumper from the elbow in the opening seconds and assisting on a 3-pointer from Kreighton Lambert. This gave them an 11 point lead in the first minute of action. The Bobcats were able to maintain a 10 point lead eight minutes into the second half although Guilford Tech would not go away and kept fighting. The Titans cut the bobcat lead to one within the next two minutes of action. The game was tied up with five and a half minutes to go in the second half until a 3 pointer from Kreighton Lambert, who was assisted by Mike Basnight, gave the Bobcats back the lead. The lead was stretched to eight with 2:20 to go in the second half after Greg Heckstall hit another 3-pointer, assisted by Jaron Burnell. The Titans were forced to call a timeout immediately after as the momentum shifted completely in favor of the Bobcats. The Bobcats were able to defend their home court and stay a perfect 4-0 (2-0 in conference play) on the season with a 70-59 win over Guilford Tech. This was the second game in a row where the Bobcats allowed under 60 points by an opponent. The 14th ranked Bobcats are getting everyone's best game and have been able to fight through adversity in each contest to pull through with wins.
Greg Heckstall led the way for the Bobcats with 18 points and 10 rebounds. This was the fourth straight double-double by the freshman. Jaron Burnell turned out his best performance of the season with 15 points. Jaleel Ferguson was the leading rebounder on the day for the Bobcats with 12 of them and also had 8 points to go along with it. Mike Basnight led the Bobcats in assists and steals with 7 and 6 respectively.
